How painful are tattoos really?

It’s a given that tattoos are painful, but how painful are they?

Placement plays a big factor on the tattoo experience will be, but it isn’t the same for everyone. It all depends on your biological make-up, fat distribution, body shape and how you deal with discomfort in general.

There are parts of the body where generally it is more un-comfortable, such as hands, palms, feet, back and ribs. Also areas where there are large amounts of nerve clusters, such as armpit, groin and buttocks can be quite painful.

But how can you cope with a tattoo if it is getting painful?

Make sure you are hydrated, this is important for your skin to be well hydrated and makes it easier to tattoo. DO NOT drink alcohol prior to your tattoo, this includes the night before, this will thin your blood and cause you to bleed more during your tattoo and reduce your pain tolerance.

Distractions are great, bring headphones to listen to your favourite podcast or watch your favourite tv show! Being distracted can help you not focus on any discomfort, there may be areas that are a little bit more pinchy than others.

Have a good meal, and bring snacks, this will give your body the energy to build resilience for your tattoo.

Bring home comforts, ask your tattooist if it is okay to bring your blanket, a teddy or anything that makes you comfortable (sadly not your pets!) having something to squeeze can sometimes help take your mind off the tattoo.

What if I cannot cope?

Don’t worry if you cannot cope if your tattoo is getting too uncomfortable, it’s good to know your limits, just let your tattooist know if you are finding it difficult, they’ll be happy to help, reschedule or maybe even offer some pain relief like Bactine. It is good to let your tattooist know prior to your appointment if you know you do not cope with getting tattooed very well, or know that you cannot sit for long sessions, they’ll be happy to accommodate and work out a plan to make sure you can have the best experience you can.

Everyone is different, if you don’t experience discomfort whilst getting tattooed you are one of the lucky ones! You’ll find your own rhythm and know what you can tolerate with placements. It is okay to start small to get a feel and move from there.
